Why Colbie Caillat’s music video made me cry

Feminism

As I’m sure you know, because unlike me you don’t like under a rock, the woman in this photo is a singer named Colbie Caillat.

I don’t know anything about her, except that she has a new music video out, and when I watched it, it made me get teary.  And then I felt profoundly grateful.  In just three minutes, she helped me return to myself, to the tender home of my own body.

And so I wanted to share it with you.

Sometimes we just need someone to remind us what we already know.

Her message isn’t new, but it’s such a sweet relief to my soul to remember what is true.  Here it is, in a nutshell:  Honey, you don’t have to try so hard.  You don’t have to change yourself into something else in order to be okay.  You’re already enough.

So simple.

So profound.

This video is going around the internet with titles like “Colbie fights back at Photoshop” or “Take your makeup off!” but the point of this piece of art– yes, I just called a pop music video art– is much deeper than that.

Take three minutes and watch it right now.

As the mother of a daughter, I’m keenly aware of the insanity of the way women are portrayed by the advertising industry.  We are used to seeing faces, bodies, skin, hair, features that are radically distorted by software.  This is a worthy topic, to be sure.

But this video is about so much more.  She reminds us that unless you can look in the mirror and be fond of yourself, nothing else is really going to matter that much.

When I look at my daughter, I see her with eyes of love.  She is so radiant, so beautiful, so gorgeous and perfectly lovable (I mean seriously, look at that sweet face down there!).  This three-minute piece reminded me to look at myself the way I look at my daughter.  Because when I can do that, my heart blooms.

I don’t have much to add, because Ms. Caillat says it so eloquently in her video.

Watch it again, and let the beauty of those women’s faces fill you up.

Have a wonderful week– squeeze those last juicy drops out of July!

much love,
Anna

Just 7 minutes, because you're absurdly busy. 7 minutes to clear your mind and refresh your spirit. 7 minutes to thank your fierce tender holy sacred tired body. 7 minutes that'll leave you centered, grounded, & clear-- like the epic fucking badass you are.
